What is a “White lie”? I heard that it is a lie that has a noble purpose; a lie that has to be told for the good of others.. is it?

It may sounds complicated, but come to think of it, it could be as simple as a husband saying “No, honey, that dress does not make you look fat” to his wife who weighs 95 kg and looks fat in any clothes she can possibly wear. The wife probably knew that she is obese and that her husband’s saying was nothing but some comfort words to ease her weight problem. She might even think that it was sweet of him to say that..

I personally prefer a sincere, honest opinion when a person tells me that I look beautiful. However, when other people’s opinion about me is negative, will I be able to handle hearing those honest opinions?

Under those circumstances, I think I prefer them to say a simple “You look fine, Dri” no matter how terrible I look. I think that other than my own family member and my very, very, very close friends, people should not comment negatively on my appearance. Don’t you think that would be inappropriate and harsh?

Just weeks ago, I highlighted my hair, which is a major changing on my appearance. For an Indonesian witness who lives in Indonesia, that can be a social suicide. But guess what, I am currently living in the U.S. where even elder’s wives highlight their hair, have more than one ear-pierce in each ear, and yes, they wear sleeveless blouse to the meetings. Anyway, the locals constantly commented on how the color looks good on my hair, and, of course, the short I-like-your-hair conversation became a regular thing before the meetings. Everything was okay.

My mom, however, was giving me a hard time, text messaging me now and then using strong words such as “unspiritual” to beat up my confidence. I was okay with that and totally handled it well. In fact, after reasoning with her, she is all good now. My brother-in-law was pretty cool too; he always said that I looked awesome with the highlight and even tries to convince my sister to do the same thing with her hair.

Today, a friend told me (for the second or third time) that I don’t look good with the highlighted hair, that he didn’t like it. First he told me about it when he was chatting with me on yahoo messenger a few days ago. Next, he posted his negative comment on my shout box in this very blog. Being a little disturbed with his posted-on-public opinion, I deleted it.

I always tried to appreciate every opinion from my friends. But when a comment is made by a person who never even saw me in person ever, I just can’t take it well. So for the rest of you who thinks that my hair is ugly, please keep it for yourself and just shortly answer “It looks okay, Dri” if I ever asked you about it.
